A Note from Jerry Lopper, Group Leader

I've accepted the responsibility for leading this discussion group, so I wanted to say Hi! and introduce myself.

My passion is personal development, being all I can be and helping others be their best.
I do this by writing, both freelance articles and self-published books. I also have a life coaching practice, maintain a Purposeful Growth blog, and a Balanced Life website, which includes articles, audios, an E-course I developed, and news items, all related to life balance.

I've come to believe that kindness must begin with self. Without high self-regard, self-respect, and love for self, we don't have the capacity to be kind to others. I've found that when I'm grouchy and critical of others it's because I'm feeling down about myself. And, of course the opposite is also true. Feeling good about me gives me the loving foundation to be kind to others.

This group will discuss and share all aspects of self-kindness. What gets in the way, the role of self talk, how to think positively, and how to use the law of attraction for self kindness as a launching pad for kindness to others

Interesting article: What You Get From Giving

Good point, Craig. Excuses only keep us trapped in drama and pain. Total self-honesty is what I shoot for, but fall short I fear. Nevertheless, I'll keep trying... Guess I'll be enlightened when I achieve it. lol. Take care, CJ

I will have to pick up a copy of that book Jerry, thanks. It is true the excuses are like emotional curtches. Our lives can be so much fuller when we are able to set these limiitations aside and open up to new experiences.

I've just reviewed a pre-release copy of Wayne Dyer's latest book, Excuses Begone! Dyer builds on the work of The Biology of Belief, developing several principles to help overcome self-limiting beliefs and behaviors. These self-limiting beliefs show up as habits which we justify with excuses - "that's just how I am," "I've always been that way," "my mother was like that so it's in my DNA," etc.

Excuses Begone! will be released on May 26th, 2009 but can be pre-ordered now. I recommend it. Read the full review of Excuses Begone!

Jerry, I am almost finished with The Biology of Belief and want to thank you for recommending it. Great reading, and life changing ideas! You're appreciated! CJ

What an interesting and positive notion Jerry. I too, will take a couple of seconds to run an abandoned cart back to the corral but then I allow negative thoughts to override that act by not giving the person who left the cart the benefit of the doubt that you mentioned. Thanks Jerry - an excellent perspective.

Here's an easy one. Parking in a super-market lot yesterday, I noticed an empty grocery cart sitting in the middle of a parking slot. With it there no one could park in that slot, but the shopping cart corral was only a few feet away so I put the cart where it belongs and went about my business. A (daily) kind act for the next person who came and wanted a good parking slot near the entrance.

Taking this one step further, I told myself the person was probably in a hurry or had small children and didn't take the time to put the cart in its proper place. Thinking that way instead of mentally picturing someone lazy and careless helped me to feel better too (self -kindness). Win-Win!

Thanks for the recommendation, Jerry! I'll buy The Biology of Belief--love books like that. I know that Rose Madder is quite ancient, but it was still pretty good. The Cell is less so, but I'm the kind of person who can't put down a lame book till the end. lol. Please feel free to recommend other books you have enjoyed. I hope you're having a terrific weekend! Hugs, CJ

CJ, you're way behind on Stephen King. Rose Madder and the Cell are good, but he's had several published since then. ;-) I usually keep a serious self help and an entertaining fiction book going at the same time. Lately I've been reading all of Anne Perry's books. She's very productive, writes mystery stories set in Victorian England. She also has five books set against WWI which are excellent, though the war descriptions are disturbing.

Quantum Physics is neat stuff. It's not logical and it doesn't make sense, but that's the world we live in. Most of the science that I've studied is linear, logical, and predictable. Quantum Physics describes real life, chaotic, and anything's possible. I love it!

You might like The Biology of Belief, a book by a biologist who describes the chemistry/biology of cells and (kind of) explains the law of attraction. I reviewed it in this article.
